968 km from Karlovy Vary
Montecatini Terme, Italy’s most famous spa town, is located in Tuscany. It was founded by Grand Duke Leopold I of Tuscany (Pietro Leopoldo), who began utilizing the sulfur-rich springs in the late 18th century. This led to the development of the town as a new spa destination.
Although the origins of the spa date back to 1773, visitors can still experience the atmosphere of the early 20th century, when Montecatini Terme enjoyed its greatest period of prosperity and most of its spa facilities, hotels, and villas were built, including thermal baths, a casino, a theater, churches, and private residences.
At the heart of the town lies a vast landscaped park with numerous spa facilities. Among the most notable complexes are Terme Tettuccio, Terme Regina, Terme Torretta, Terme Tamerici, and Terme Excelsior.
Particularly characteristic of Montecatini Terme are its elegant colonnades, most of which were completed during the first half of the 20th century. Thanks to them, the town became known as the “Italian Karlovy Vary.” Montecatini Terme has welcomed many distinguished visitors, including actors, writers, composers, artists, and members of royal families.
