48 km from Karlovy Vary
Due to its size and the quality of its preserved architecture, Františkovy Lázně (Franzensbad) ranks among the most important spa towns in Europe. The town was founded in 1793 in honor of the future Austrian Emperor Francis I. The decisive factor in establishing the town at this location was the abundance of mineral springs.
Although Františkovy Lázně was founded during the Classical period, it represents an unusual urban planning concept. The town has a square layout with a parallel street grid and is characterized by a high concentration of Classical, Empire-style, and Historicist buildings.
The complex of spa buildings is surrounded by an extensive park. Individual springs are marked by Classical-style pavilions. Surrounding the park is the newer part of the town, filled with spa villas and houses, some of which were built with an emphasis on the Protestant faith.
