Bad Kissingen is located on the banks of the Fränkische Saale River. After 1815, the Bavarian state invested substantial financial resources into the spa district, triggering the town’s economic revival. The Kursaal was built by the royal court architect Friedrich von Gärtner and connected to the new cast-iron pavilion above the Rakoczi and Pandur springs.

As a result of the growing popularity of the drinking cure, arcades and a storage facility for bottles of Kissingen mineral water—well known throughout the region—were constructed. The subsequent flourishing of the spa industry led to the development of additional facilities, beginning with the Salinenbad in 1842 and culminating in the Kurhausbad and the Luitpoldbad.

With the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, the town was connected to the railway network, giving Bad Kissingen a further significant boost. Religious buildings representing various faiths testify to the town’s intercultural exchange. The town also became a meeting place for artists and writers. New and highly prestigious spa buildings were opened, including the spa theater, the Wandelhalle promenade with its integrated drinking hall, and the Regentenbau. The latter served as an assembly hall for the distinguished spa society. Around the spa district, an extensive network of gardens and parks was created, including the Kurpark, Altenberg, Luitpoldpark, and Rosengarten.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the spa town began to expand, leading to the creation of promenades along the river and forest trails that guided visitors to restaurants, remarkable natural sites, and scenic viewpoints.
