Findlater's Obelisk
The obelisk was erected upon the order of the Karlsbad Town Council in honour of Scottish peer, Lord James Ogilvy, Earl of Findlater, near the path leading to the Diana Observation Tower in 1804. The generous benefactor stayed at the spa 14 times between the years 1793 and 1810. He was so enchanted by the beauty of the surrounding woods and lookouts that he decided to fund the building and enlargement of several promenades and arbours in the spa woods.More
Column of Grateful Hungarians
The memorial column was erected on the terrace by the winding road on the hill below the Imperial Hotel in 1883 as a symbol of gratitude of Hungarian patients. The monument is the work of local sculptor L. Tröger. The column was created in honour of the Karlovy Vary mineral springs and it was donated to the town.More
Bedřich Smetana's Monument
The monument of Czech composer Bedřich Smetana created by academic sculptor Josef Wagner in 1950 stands in the park near Poštovní dvůr (Postal Court) in the southern part of the city. It was erected in memory of the first Czech concert held in Karlovy Vary in the Postal Court on 19 July 1933. Nearby, you may also find monuments of Ludwig van Beethoven and Friedrich Schiller.More
Column of Otto I
The granite column was erected in 1852 in honour of King Otto I of Greece on Ottova výšina (Otto's Height) in the spa woods above the city of Karlovy Vary. King Otto I visited Karlovy Vary five times between the years 1836 and 1865. He was very popular among the local inhabitants for his kindness, pleasant attitude and generosity. In 2008, an extensive renovation was launched to save the damaged memorial column. Just a few metres below the Column of Otto I, you may also find a lookout platform that offers a magnificent view of the spa town in the valley.More
Bust of Adam Mickiewicz
The current bust of the renowned Polish Romantic writer and poet, Adam Mickiewicz, created in 1947 by local painter and sculptor Břetislav Werner with the use of an older pedestal stands at the edge of the park in front of Parkhotel Richmond. The unveiling ceremony took place on 17 October 1948. In the park, you may also visit a monument dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven, Alois Klein's Arbour with the Štěpánka Spring, or the Japanese Garden.More
Bust of Gallus Hochberger
The bust of the reputed Karlsbad spa physician, Dr. Gallus Ritter von Hochberger, created by Prague sculptor Tomáš Seidan in 1890 stands in the inner courtyard of Vojenský lázeňský ústav (Army Spa Institution). Unfortunately, because the courtyard serves only to the guests of the Army Spa Institution, the monument is not accessible to the general public.More
Bust of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
The bust of the world-renowned German poet, writer and playwright, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, created by sculptor Adolf von Donndorf from Stuttgart in 1883 stands on a younger pedestal by Goethova stezka (Goethe's Path) not far from the Art Gallery. It was erected in honour of Goethe's thirteen visits to Karlovy Vary. Numerous other memorial plaques and reliefs may be found along Goethe's Path, which serves as the main connecting route for the spa guests with the southern part of the city.More
Bust of Peter the Great
The bust of Russian Tsar Peter the Great (Peter I) created by Prague sculptor Tomáš Seidan in 1877 is installed on a rock below the lookout on Petrova výšina (Peter's Height). It commemorates an event when the Russian Tsar made a bet and rode up to the lookout on a horse without a saddle during his second visit to the spa in 1712. While at Peter's Height, you may also admire Therese's Obelisk and a magnificent view of the spa town in the valley. The Jelení skok (Deer Jump) Restaurant may also be found nearby.More
Antonín Dvořák's Monument
The monument of world famous Czech composer Antonín Dvořák created by local sculptor Karel Kuneš in 1974 stands in Dvořákovy sady (Dvořák's Park) near Sadová kolonáda (Park Colonnade). It commemorates Dvořák's seven stays at the spa between 1879 and 1894 and the European premiere of his New World Symphony at Poštovní dvůr (Postal Court) in 1894. In its time, it was the first monument to Antonín Dvořák unveiled on the territory of Czechoslovakia and perhaps in the world.More
Friedrich Schiller's Monument
The grandiose Art Nouveau monument of the German poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller was created by Viennese architect Friedrich Ohmann in 1909 and you may find it near the Art Gallery in the southern part of Karlovy Vary. The marble relief is the work of local academic sculptor Max Hiller. It is worth mentioning that Friedrich Schiller began working on his Wallenstein Trilogy while staying at the spa in 1791.More
