Who are we celebrating?

On February 19, 300 years ago, David Josef Becher was born – a physician, balneologist, scholar, patron, philanthropist, and a “noble man worthy of sincere and unfeigned praise,” as inscribed on his tombstone. A man with an extraordinary education for his time and a vision that even the greatest scholars of his era would envy. Progressive and enterprising, his balneological work laid the foundation for modern spa treatment and the construction of key spa buildings.

He was also a generous patron who supported Karlovy Vary's culture and the establishment of its main school. His charity towards the poor and disadvantaged was widely known, as reflected in his generous will.
