History of the monument

The monument dedicated to German philosopher, political thinker and revolutionist Karl Marx is the work of local sculptor Karel Kuneš and it was installed in the park opposite the Russian Consulate on Zámecký vrch (Castle Hill) in 1988. The monument commemorates Marx's three stays at the spa in the years 1874, 1875, and 1876. Marcel Šulc collaborated on the architectonic design of the monument.

The unveiling ceremony took place on 05 May 1988. The monument comprises a bronze above-life size statue of Karl Marx in a seated position, which is placed on a massive prismatic pedestal made of polished granite panels. It was already the second monument of Karl Marx created by sculptor Kuneš in Karlovy Vary, Marx's bust had been installed earlier on the premises of Vřídelní kolonáda (Hot Spring Colonnade).
