How to get there

Route 1: You may reach Alois Klein's Arbour if you walk from the Hot Spring in the spa centre upstream along the right bank of the Teplá River to Grandhotel Pupp where you will continue up Goethova stezka (Goethe's Path) to the park in front of Parkhotel Richmond. The seep of the Štěpánka Spring is located in the wooden arbour. This route, which offers a pleasant walk through the city centre, is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and it will take you about half an hour.

Route 2: The second alternative is to travel by Bus No. 2 or Bus No. 7 from the "Tržnice" (Market) city bus terminal to the "Richmond" stop by the Art Gallery. From there, you will walk only about 100 metres into the park.

Seeps of thermal water have been present on the land of the present-day park in front of Parkhotel Richmond since the 18th century. In 1884, one of the springs was captured on the site and it was named in honour of Austrian Archduchess Stephanie. Thanks to its unique content rich in iron, the acidulous water of the Štěpánka Spring eventually became an essential component of the drinking cure taken by the spa guests. In the early 20th century, however, the seep unexpectedly disappeared.

After a number of unsuccessful attempts, the spring finally reappeared in a new well drilled in 1993. Since 1997, the recaptured seep of the Štěpánka Spring has been covered by an octagonal wooden arbour, which was built in Swiss style and named in honour of Alois Klein. The Štěpánka Spring belongs among mineral springs that have not been declared a natural healing resource as yet.

Hot Spring

Hot Spring

The most famous mineral spring of Karlovy Vary, which is known as Vřídlo (Hot Spring), may be found inside the modern Hot Spring Colonnade in front of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in the centre of Karlovy Vary. The geyser of Vřídlo gushing to a height of almost 12 metres is a unique natural phenomenon that has become the symbol of spa. As the thermal water is too hot for many patients, it is distributed into five spring bowls, marked A, B, and C, in which it is cooled to a temperature of 50 and 30°C in order to be suitable for the drinking cure. Thermal water from the spring is supplied to various spa facilities and it is also used for the production of traditional thermal salt and stone-coated souvenirs. You ought not to miss the guided tour of the underground of the Hot Spring Colonnade.

The 2nd mineral spring of Karlovy Vary known as Pramen Karla IV. (Charles IV Spring) may be found inside the wooden Market Colonnade below Zámecká věž (Castle Tower) in the historical centre of Karlovy Vary. According to legend, Emperor Charles IV healed his ailing limbs at the spring and its curative effects probably convinced the sovereign to found a spa town in its surroundings.
