The city of Bath has been a place of healing for more than two thousand years. Roman baths, monastic infirmaries, and medieval hospitals were established here. Following the Reformation in the 16th century, the baths were placed under municipal administration, and from the 18th century onward, monuments and historic buildings have undergone regular restoration and renovation. The General Hospital (1739) provided advanced medical practices, diagnostic medicine, and treatment for the poor.
The city council promoted Bath as a place for both leisure and healing, and as a result, tourism soon became a major focus. Through redevelopment in the Neoclassical style, Bath evolved into one of Europe’s most elegant resorts. Between 1720 and 1790, terraces, crescent-shaped houses, circular and square plazas, parks, and gardens were constructed throughout the city.
A variety of notable attractions emerged, including promenades, recreational areas, and assembly rooms. Bath intentionally brings the open landscape directly into the heart of the city. The surrounding countryside also possesses exceptional qualities and offers visitors opportunities for walking and riding. Bath became a center of learning, serving as a crossroads for ideas and developments in natural philosophy and the emerging sciences. This helped spread Enlightenment thinking as well as medical theories and practices. Today, the city retains a highly preserved authentic historic fabric and enduring cultural traditions.
