We have a few cultural and sports events for you which will take part in Karlovy Vary in 2016 and which you might not want to miss.
This year the founder of the town himself will bring you to VARY° – all year will be marked by the 700th birthday anniversary of Charles IV. On this occasion the website 700.karlovyvary.cz has been created where you can find all events planned for this anniversary.
Opening of the spa season
An important event is the annual Opening of the Spa Season. 658 – this is the number of the season which will be opened in Karlovy Vary at the first weekend in May, i.e. from the 6th to the 8th May 2016. You can look forward to a varied cultural and social programme. The founder of the town Charles IV himself is coming to the town together with his retinue to open the season officially. This “Charles IV´s Procession” is a traditional part of the Opening of the Spa Season in Karlovy Vary. Like in previous years, mineral springs will be consecrated so that they can keep restoring the visitors to Karlovy Vary to health. You can also look forward to the traditional Food Festival of the fair of handicrafts.
Mattoni ½ Marathon Karlovy Vary 2016
Do you like running? Or do you like watching other people running? There is a possibility to try the ½ Marathon from the RunCzech family in Karlovy Vary too. Running through the beautiful spa zone with a fantastic audience. You can experience it only at the ½ Marathon Karlovy Vary. The start is on the 21st May 2016.
A part of the ½ Marathon Karlovy Vary 2016 is also the Family Run for both families and individuals. It is aimed at all those who want to be a part of the ½ Marathon; however, they do not dare to run 21.0975 km.
Karlovy Vary carnival
The 9th year of the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Carnival has been prepared to take part from the 3rd to the 5th June 2016. Do you have a mask? Or an interesting fancy costume? Get ready and set off in a procession and the rhythm of dance music with this year´s motto “Carnival of the Kings”. And if you prefer watching, it does not matter. There will definitely be a lot to see.
The International Film Festival Karlovy Vary
The International Film Festival Karlovy Vary is the most significant event in the town. In 2016, to be more precise from the 1st to 9th July 2016, the 51st year of the festival will be held.
If you want to see the biggest and most famous spa of the Czech Republic in a completely different light than during the rest of the year, choose just the International Film Festival Karlovy Vary. You can expect a varied supporting programme, concerts, parties and a plenty of performances.
Open-air concerts at colonnades
Concerts of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra at colonnades for all people present are a traditional and welcome sort of entertainment on August days in summer. Admission is free. Each concert at a colonnade creates a pleasant spa atmosphere.
The Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra has already been playing for 181 seasons. It is the oldest orchestra in Bohemia and one of the oldest in the world.
City Triathlon 2016
Swimming + Bike + Running = Triathlon
It all started exactly twenty-two years ago in 1994 when Karlovy Vary played host to the first competition of the Czech Cup. Its prestige has been growing year after year. You can go to support your favourite sportsman to the Rolava grounds or to the spa centre on the 27th and 28th August 2016. These are the places where competitions will be held.
Festival of light installations
Do you fancy light productions? Then you must definitely mark red the 2nd and the 3rd September in our diary when Karlovy Vary will be full of light owing to the audio visual show the Royal Route of Charles IV – 700 Years with Us. You will enjoy e.g. video mapping, laser shows or water screen shows on the route running from the Elizabeth Spa building to the Imperial Spa Building.
Days of European Heritage
Through “The Days of Europe Heritage” gates of the most interesting architectural , archaeological, technical and sacral monuments, museums, galleries, libraries and other buildings and rooms open including those which are usually partly or completely closed.
We would like to invite you to discover what has not been discovered yet in the Linhart Game Park, to places where Charles IV really walked (the Castle Tower and the Market Colonnade) and you will also be able to examine Charles IV Viewing Point.
And this all on the 3rd and 4th September.
Karlovy Vary Folklore Festival
The aim of the Karlovy Vary folklore Festival is to protect and revive customs, dances and folk music from the region of Karlovy Vary reinforcing so the relationship of its inhabitants to the territory where they live and which was marked by a complicated historical development. Regularly in September, from as early as 1996. The supposed term of the festival is from the 6th to the 11th September 2016.
Dvořák Autumn in Karlovy Vary
Antonín Dvořák, probably the most famous Czech composer. One of the oldest music festivals in Europe, which enchants the beautiful autumn in Karlovy Vary every year, bears his name.
International Jazz Festival XXXIII
The festival, which has been held without any interruption since 1984, will take place in Karlovy Vary from the 10th to the 20th October. This year´s festival is the sixteenth Jazzfest organized by the association Jazz Circle whose director and an active participant at the same time is the saxophonist Milan Krajíc.
The international film festival TOURFILM 2016
The oldest film festival of films about tourism and travelling in the world. Karlovy Vary is full of films about tourism on three days in October. It will already be the 49th year in 2016. It will be held from the 30th September till the 2nd October 2016.
The aim of the festival is presenting and awarding the films and multimedia whose content and artistic standards contribute to the development of both national and foreign tourism and, at the same time, help to spread these films worldwide.
Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition
The competition, which was first aimed only at students of art schools, has become a renowned international competition in the course of years. The number of contestants ranges from 80 to 110 and singers from the whole world compete in sections OPERA, JUNIOR and SONG.
Like the famous film festival, this competition will enter its 51st season in 2016. It will be held from the 4th till the 11th November.
