The city has a new Christmas tree. The damaged Douglas fir has been replaced by a spruce from Tuhnice.

The main symbol of Christmas in Karlovy Vary will be a fifty-year-old Norway spruce approximately seventeen metres tall. The conifer, weighing almost three tonnes, was felled yesterday in an allotment garden in the Tuhnice district and installed in front of the Thermal Hotel. Workers from Karlovy Vary Spa Forests and Parks placed the spruce into the ground opening and secured it in a special stand. The city’s Christmas tree will thus rise to a height of sixteen metres. On Thursday, the installation of ornaments and lighting will take place. The ceremonial lighting of the tree will be held on Sunday, 30 November at 6 p.m.

The Norway spruce replaces the Douglas fir that was originally intended to serve as the city’s Christmas tree. During felling, transport, and installation, the Douglas fir was damaged in a way that affected both its safety and appearance. The tree was therefore removed on Monday. Its branches will be used for city decorations and for winter protection of flowerbeds. The trunk will be processed into firewood.
