Karlovy VARY celebrates "Hippocrates of Karlovy Vary"
Karlovy Vary is preparing celebrations dedicated to its distinguished spa physician, Med. Dr. David Becher * 19 February 1725 in Karlovy Vary, † 5 February 1792 in Karlovy Vary, physician–balneologist, scholar, patron, benefactor
The year 2025 offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Dr. David Becher, one of the most notable natives of Karlovy Vary and a pioneer of modern balneology.
With his innovations, the outstanding physician, patron, benefactor, and scholar shaped balneology not only of his time but also of the following centuries. Since his legacy remains alive and inspiring, it deserves a worthy form of commemoration.
David Becher significantly contributed to the development of breakthrough treatment methods based on the utilisation of the Karlovy Vary mineral springs. By introducing drinking cures with precisely determined daily doses, by promoting cultivated consumption of the curative water directly at the springs and by encouraging the construction of colonnades and pavilions, he laid the foundations of spa treatment in Karlovy Vary.
The celebrations will consist of new projects and social events, entertainment or educational programmes linked to the famous physician, which will be organised by various local companies. Designed to appeal to both Karlovy Vary residents and spa guests, the planned events include, for example:
UNESCO World Heritage Days: A special programme dedicated to the natural and cultural wealth of Karlovy Vary.
- "I drink the springs" campaign: Discover the healing power of the Karlovy Vary springs.
- Special concerts of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra (KSO): A musical experience that will leave you enchanted.
- Opening of the Spa Season with Dr. Becher.
- Exhibitions and thematic lectures: The life and work of David Becher.
- Entertaining city tours: In the footsteps of Becher's era and the hidden treasures of Karlovy Vary.
- Innovative activities: Untraditional events combining history with modern trends.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT BECHER'S VARY° CELEBRATIONS
