History of the monument

The original memorial obelisk was erected in 1818 in the park near Poštovní dvůr (Postal Court) upon the order of Austrian Army officers in honour of the great victory of Field Marshal Karl Philipp, Prince of Schwarzenberg, against Napoleon in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. The unveiling ceremony took place on 30 June 1818 during the stay of the Prince of Schwarzenberg in Karlovy Vary.

A double-row alley was planted from the Postal Court to the obelisk, the surroundings were landscaped and complemented with benches. The original monument was replaced by the current granite obelisk in 1891 upon the order of Karl Philipp's grandson, Karl V, Prince of Schwarzenberg. Today, the obelisk and its surroundings are known as Zákoutí knížete Karla Schwarzenberga (Prince Karl Schwarzenberg's Corner).
