How to get there

Route 1: You may reach Schiller's monument if you walk from the Hot Spring in the city centre upstream along the right bank of the Teplá River to Grandhotel Pupp where you will continue up Goethova stezka (Goethe's Path) to the Art Gallery. This route, which offers a pleasant walk through the city centre, is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and it will take you about half an hour.

Route 2: If you decide for the second route, travel by Bus No. 2 or Bus No. 7 from the "Tržnice" (Market) stop to the "Richmond" stop by the Art Gallery. The monument is only 60 metres away from the bus stop.

History of the monument

The grandiose Art Nouveau monument of the renowned German poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller was erected in 1909 according to the design of Viennese architect Friedrich Ohmann who is also the author of the colonnade over the Castle Spring. The marble relief is the work of local academic sculptor Max Hiller.

The idea of building a monument that would commemorate Friedrich Schiller's stay at the spa in 1791 came from the Karlsbad Embellishment Association. Since Friedrich Schiller began working on his Wallenstein Trilogy namely while staying at the spa in 1791. The unveiling ceremony took place on 10 November 1909 at the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller's birth.

The grandiose Art Nouveau stone monument in the shape of an open half-round arbour with columns resembles Antique structures and thank to its sensitive positioning among the surrounding greenery, it evokes the atmosphere of an airy natural temple. The monument is decorated with engraved titles of and quotations from Schiller's works and it is complemented with stone benches.
