How to get there

Route 1:        You may reach the memorial column if you walk from the Hot Spring in the city centre upstream along the Teplá River. After you reach Galerie umění (Art Gallery), walk up about 200 metres along Dorothea's Arbour to the plane by the road. This route, which offers a pleasant walk through the city centre, is approximately 1.1 kilometres long and it will take you about half an hour.

Route 2:        If you decide for the second route, travel by Bus No. 2 or Bus No. 7 from the "Tržnice" (Market) stop to the "Richmond" stop by the Art Gallery. From there, you will need to walk up approximately 200 metres along Dorothea's Arbour to the memorial column.

History of the monument

The memorial column was erected on the terrace by the winding road on the hill below the Imperial Hotel in 1883 as a symbol of gratitude of Hungarian patients. The monument is the work of local sculptor L. Tröger. The column was created in honour of the Karlovy Vary mineral springs and it was donated to the town.

The granite obelisk-shaped column bears gilded dedication inscriptions in German, Hungarian and French. You may also visit the nearby wooden Empire style Dorothea's Arbour, which was built in 1791 on a rock below the memorial column.
