How to get there

Route 1:        You may reach the villa if you walk from the Hot Spring in the city centre along the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene to Kolmá Street where you will continue up the steep stairs to a foot path that leads to Jean de Carro Park. The short, yet challenging route due to the steep decline is approximately 500 metres long and it will take you about 10 minutes.

Route 2:        An easier alternative is to travel by Bus No. 2, Bus No. 7, Bus No. 8 or Bus No. 13 from the "Tržnice" (Market) city bus terminal to the "Na Vyhlídce" stop. From the bus stop, walk down into the park where the villa is located.

History of the structure

The Empire-style villa was built between 1853 and 1854 by local builder Johann Knoll upon the order of Baron August von Lützow. Lützow's Villa was one the first structures of its kind in Karlovy Vary, as well as in northwestern Bohemia. Baron Lützow had the grounds surrounding his villa landscaped as a romantic garden with bastions, numerous mysterious recesses, a gloriette, pergolas, gazebos, and promenades. In his garden, the rather eccentric collector of artworks and passionate animal lover, gathered many interesting sculptures that were mostly created by his friend, famous Berlin sculptor August Kiss.

Today, the renovated villa is privately owned and closed to the public. In the adjoining Jean de Carro Park, you may admire a column with the statue of Charles IV, unveiled at theoccasion of the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Karlovy Vary in 1858.
