Verdi started to compose the Nabucco opera in times of deep personal crisis, when he buried both his children and his wife Margherita. The fiasco he had experienced at the premiere of his opera „King for a Day“ led him to make the decision not to compose operas any more. Merelli, the impresario of La Scala in Milan, was absolutely positive about his talent and literally forced the libretto for Nabukadnesar on him. The book really gripped Verdi, so he decided to try his luck one more time as an opera composer. The success of the Nabucco premiere in La Scala on 9 March 1842 was the final twist of Verdi‘s fate, and opera art enthusiasts won one of the most celebrated composers. The glamour of the Nabucco premiere has never diminished. The biblical story of Jewish king Nabukadnesar and the oppressed Jewish people is still popular with the opera audience today. The Jewish choir „Va, pensiero, sull´ali dorate“ is one of the most wonderful pieces in the entire body of opera literature.
