History of the monument

The Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk (Jan Nepomucký) was created by an unknown sculptor and it was erected in 1746 in memory of a massive cloudburst followed by a huge flash flood that had swept through the town on 21st of May in the same year. The statue was funded from the inheritance of renowned Karlsbad physician Franz Bachmann, who had taught at the university in Prague. The sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is complemented with statuettes of cupids and it stands on richly profiled triangular pedestal. The statue stands by the side face of the decanal Church of Saint Mary Magdalene. You may combine your visit to the statue with a tour of the monumental Baroque church, as well as of other historic sites in the spa centre of Karlovy Vary.
