Only several from the vast majority of operettas have kept their unique attraction until today - and The Bat is certainly one of them. The experienced French librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, Oenbach's favourite collaborators and among other things also the creators of
the Bizet's Carmen libretto, made the foundation for a simple comedy play with singing, vaudeville, a story with sparkling humour - on its basis, Strauss produced his best work, which had become the cornerstone of the operetta genre.
